How to Use the Points-Based Grade Calculator

In the United States and globally, many middle school, high school, and college courses use a points-based grading system. Unlike weighted categories (e.g., "Exams are 50%"), every assignment in a points-based system is simply worth a certain number of raw points. Your final grade is calculated by taking all the points you earned throughout the semester and dividing them by the total points possible.

Step-by-Step Guide

Find Your Syllabus or Gradebook: Look at your online portal (Canvas, Blackboard, etc.) to see your grades formatted as fractions (e.g., 85/100).
Enter Points Earned: In the first box, enter the top number of the fraction (the points you actually received).
Enter Points Possible: In the second box, enter the bottom number (the total points the assignment was out of).
Add More Assignments: Click "Add Assignment" to keep adding rows until your entire gradebook is entered. The calculator will tally your current standing at the top.

When NOT to use this tool:

If your syllabus strictly states that your grade is broken down into percentage categories (for example: Homework = 20%, Quizzes = 30%, Final = 50%), then a simple points-based average will give you a mathematically incorrect answer. The Point-Based Formula

This is the fundamental math happening behind the scenes. If you want to double-check our work on a piece of scratch paper, use this formula:

(Total Points Earned) ÷ (Total Points Possible) × 100 = Final Percentage

For example, if you earned an 85/100 on an exam and a 15/20 on a homework assignment, your total earned points are 100, and your total possible points are 120. Your grade is 100 ÷ 120 = 83.33%.
