How to Calculate a Weighted Grade

Unlike a points-based system, most college and high school courses use a weighted grading system. This means that a Final Exam is mathematically worth much more to your overall grade than a single homework assignment, regardless of how many raw points the test was graded out of. Instructors usually define these in a syllabus as Categories (e.g. "Quizzes are worth 20% of your grade"). Our Weighted Grade Calculator takes the guesswork out of these complex averages.

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Check Your Syllabus: Locate the grading breakdown section provided by your professor (e.g., Homework 20%, Midterm 30%, Final 50%).
2. Enter Category Names: Label the rows in our calculator to match your syllabus.
3. Input Your Averages: Enter the percentage grade you currently have in that category (e.g., 85%). If you only know your raw points, use our Points-Based Grade Calculator to find your average for that specific category first.
4. Input the Weight: Enter the percentage weight assigned to that category (e.g., 20).

For example, if you scored a 90% on an exam category that is worth 30% of your grade, and a 100% on homework that is worth 10% of your grade, your calculation is: (90 × 0.30) + (100 × 0.10) = 27 + 10 = 37% towards your final total.

What if my weights don't equal 100% yet?

It's very common to want to know your current grade in the middle of the semester, long before the final exam has been taken. Our calculator is smart enough to handle classes that are still in progress.
